IMPORTANT: as an instructor, if any 3 of your last 10 (or less) students you have recommended for flight tests fail it will determined that YOU are the cause and The Minister will conduct follow up action.
Class 4 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- CPL or ATPL
- 25 hours ground school
- 30 hours of dual flight instruction
- Incl. 5 hours on how to teach instrument skills
- 5 of these hours can be on an approved FTD
- 70% on the Transport Canada written exam [AIRAF]
- Pass a flight test
Flight Test Admissions
Requirements for admission to the instructor flight test include:
- Photo ID with signature
- Valid medical certificate
- A valid commercial pilot licence
- Letter of recommendation within last 30 days AND signed by a Class 1 Instructor
- Proof of passing the AIRAF with 70% or greater in the previous 24 months
- A signed PTR displaying the required training
Privileges
With a Class 4 Instructor Rating you can train students for:
- recreational pilot permits
- pilot licences
- night ratings and VFR OTT ratings
You can also…
- give recommendations for night ratings and VFR OTT ratings
- authorize student solos
- recommend students for aeroplane rec permit and pilot licences
IMPORTANT: You must be under supervision of a Class 1 or 2 flight instructor. Before sending students solo or for flight test they will need to have a progress check ride with your supervising instructor. You will also need to keep a detailed record of your your flight training as an instructor.
Validity: 12 months
Class 3 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- Hold a Class 4 Flight Instructor rating
- Have flown 100 hours with students towards a pilot licence
- You must have a record of student training showing that you:
- have sent 3 students for solo flights
- have recommended 3 students for flight tests AND they have passed
- have spent at least 5 of the last 10 training hours with the aforementioned students
- NO flight test required
Privileges
With a Class 3 Instructor Rating you
- have the same privileges as a Class 4, but without supervision
- can act as Chief Pilot
Validity: 24 months
Class 2 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- Hold a Class 3 Flight Instructor rating
- Score 70% on the AIRAT (within the preceding 24 months)
- You must have 500 hours of flight training experience, with:
- 10 recommendations for flight tests
- 400 hours of flight training toward a pilot licence
- Pass a flight test
Privileges
With a Class 2 Instructor Rating you
- have the same privileges as a Class 3
- can act as Chief Pilot
- can supervise Class 4 instructors
Validity: 36 months
Class 1 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- Hold a Class 2 Flight Instructor rating
- Score 80% on the AIRAT (within the preceding 24 months)
- You must have 750 hours of flight training experience, with:
- 10 recommendations for flight tests
- 600 hours of flight training toward a pilot licence
- Pass a flight test
Privileges
With a Class 1 Instructor Rating you
- have the same privileges as a Class 2
- can act as Chief Pilot
- can supervise Class 4 instructors
- can give ground/air training for the Flight Instructor Rating
Validity: 48 months
