Flight Instructor Renewals

You have some options when it comes to renewing your flight instructor rating. You can:

  1. take take the instructor flight test OR
  2. take an instructor rating renewal course OR
  3. show proof of 300+ instructing hours AND proof of at least 80% of your students passing flight tests for which you recommended them all within the last 24 months. (minimum 4 of 5 students)

If your rating has expired within the last 12 months you will need to pass the instructor flight test again to renew your rating. If your rating expired more than 12 months ago but less than 24 months ago you will need a recommend from at Class 1 instructor AND you will need to pass the instructor flight test again. If your rating has been expired for more than 24 months you will need to re-write and pass the AIRAF (Class 3 or 4) or AIRAT (Class 1 or 2) with 70% or 80% respectively AND a recommend from a Class 1 instructor AND pass the instructor flight test again.

It is also important to note that you will need to re-take the instructor flight test every third time you renew if you have not renewed by flight test for the preceding 2 renewals.
